Coaching youth hockey is a rewarding experience that allows you to shape young athletes both on and off the ice. At West Mall Lightning, we believe in fostering a positive, inclusive, and developmental hockey environment. Whether you're a former player or just passionate about hockey, we welcome you to get involved!
What Does It Mean to Be a Coach?
Coaching is more than just running practices and calling plays. It's about mentoring young players, instilling teamwork and discipline, and being a role model in the community. Our coaches help build confidence, sportsmanship, and a love for the game.

Coaching Requirements
- Coaching Certification (varies based on level – see resources below).
- Completion of the Respect in Sport Program.
- Criminal Record & Vulnerable Sector Check.
- First Aid & Safety Training (recommended).
Time Commitment
Coaching involves practices, games, and occasional team events. Depending on the level, you may be required to commit to:
- 1-2 practices per week.
- 1-2 games per week (weekdays or weekends).
- Additional travel for tournaments (depending on level).
- Off-ice planning, team communication, and development.

How to Apply
Interested in becoming a coach? Follow these steps:
- Complete the necessary coaching certification and Respect in Sport program.
- Submit a Criminal Record Check and Vulnerable Sector Screening.
- Contact our coaching coordinator to discuss available positions.
- Attend a coaching orientation and begin making a difference!
